FACES OF AFRICA: A CULTURAL JOURNEY
This exhibit is a unique blend of African Cultures, featuring people and art from Nigeria, Zaire, Kenya, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Mali, Ghana, Gambia, Cameroon, and Liberia. It includes masks, instruments, fabrics, carvings, jewelry, ebony, a large picture display, pottery, baskets, and other artifacts. As each class visits the exhibit they will make a cowrie shell necklace, play instruments, try on African garments and make bookmarks or note cards which they will stamp with Ashanti Adinkra symbols. Two weeks before the project, the teachers will receive a teacher's guide which will inform them about the exhibit and offer suggestions and activities for the students. WORKSHOPS Faces of Africa workshops are suitable for schools, community centers, etc., and include jewelry-making, mask-making, tie-dye, instruments of Africa, drum circle, dance, and shekere-making. Group sizes in most of the workshops (with the exception of dance and instruments of Africa) are limited to about 30 people per session. Lengths of sessions range from 45 minutes to two hours. Workshops can be conducted for children only, adults only, or families with children and adults. The workshops are designed to bring about understanding of culture through creative expressions.
